New Pulitzer Prize rules straight up call out databases.

From the Pulitzer rule changes announcement:

entries may use any available journalistic tool, including text reporting, videos, databases, multimedia or interactive presentations or any combination of those formats.

/via Julia Allison tweet

Especially cool about the databases part. (We know what they meant :D.)

It's been over five years since Adrian Holovaty's awesome chicagocrime.org. Since then, everyblock.com happened, (not to mention a straight up competitive rivalry among city mayors to open/ make available more civic data.)

Sidebar: was just having a conversation about programming not being an occupational specialty, but increasingly part of general literacy. Like say, for journalists.

Scrapertown: a video about scraper bikes in Oakland, and the club dedicated to them

Scrapertown from California is a place. on Vimeo.

Scrapertown is a new, mini-documentary that just came out.  It's about a group of folks in Oakland who mod their bikes, and ride around (mostly) East Oakland.

Their leader, the Scraper Bike King, is into entrepreneurship, giving kids a non-violent escape from "what's really going on," and environmentalism.

Despite the music-heavy intro, the video later shows full on talking interviews. Check it out.

New in Google Docs: Dedicated Drawing App (video)

You guys.

Now is not the time or place to cover every single thing Google did to Google Docs today.

Google did a great job of that. All over the place.

But I was particularly excited about the new drawing app, which allows concurrent editing.

So I made a lil screencast:

For a really complete overview of everything new in Google Docs, check out this Google-produced video:

Video: This Week in Startups #41 with Jason Calacanis, James Segil, and ... Joel Spolsky?!?

[update: video embed fixed. They switched it after a few hours.]

(The episode where Jason wins poker money off of Ted special-dinner elites.)

Come for the business advice, stay for the comedy.

Nahbut... seriously.

There really is good, helpful business and  info in every TWIST interview/episode.

But that's not why I love this show on the weekends.

Jason is surprisingly hilarious and charismatic for somebody who's not a "performer" professionally (Reminder: He's a CEO). He has great comic timing and monologue flow.  (I want less Mahalo links, and more screentime for this guy.)

Also: He likes Kanye and Jay-Z. (I like Kanye and Jay-Z!)

Surprise guest: Joel Spolsky!

(Advice: Episodes are long: Best to listen on weekends.)

Dear Corporate America. You're being taken over by super casual slackers.

Not just web stuff. Taking over banking.
It's super casual. Normal whatever.

Television news communication patterns.

Promise this isn't boring or preachy or depressing.
Judgemental, but in a fun way!
